America was engaged in “fighting the Cold War.” To Americans, this was sold as a noble exercise in fighting communism, a project of liberation. That much was propaganda, because in practice, it meant supporting fascist movement after fascist movement in literally every corner of the globe. In Chile, America supported Pinochet’s death squads, in Nicaragua, America ran guns to the hard right and flooded America’s own cities with crack in order to do so — and in Afghanistan, America came to support a little know rabble of militant hyper-conservatives known as “the Taliban.”
