Canada's social safety net began collapsing in the late 1980s, and as a result, austerity measures were put into place by the provincial governments. This lead to a marked increase in poverty that cause fascist parties like the UCP and the CAQ to form. Both parties would win provincial elections after 2016, resulting in folks like Jason Kenney coming to power.
