Let me give you a tiny taste of life under the Taliban. Have you ever met them? I have. As a teenager, I went to school across from them, for a time. A jihadi mosque, right next door. Sound like fun? We were teenagers. We laughed, invincible in our youth. And yet the dichotomy was mind-boggling. The jihadis wanted a society where music wouldn’t be allowed, where women would be relegated to sexual slavery. Meanwhile we’d sit on the roof of the high school, smoke spliffs, kiss girls, and play guitars. Not just two worlds. Two different millennia.
