In Tennessee, SB 2777, which would allow teachers to misgender their students, was passed by a 67-to-25 vote. NBC reports: “Advocates say that this type of legislation has previously been proposed in West Virginia and Rhode Island, but has never passed through a state’s legislative chamber.” For those who are unaware, bigots often use misgendering as an aggression against trans people to deny our identities and use the transphobic talking point that we are not aware of our own experiences and identities. They will tell us that we are “mentally ill,” using a talking point that has also been weaponized against gay people to deny their sexuality. It is no surprise that Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis has signed the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill. Those who are in power who are currently attacking trans people are not stopping there. The politicians who are making these decisions about trans people have the same agenda for gay people and they will target us whenever they find that they can attract a movement against us. In recent months the promotion of this hateful legislation has filtered down to parents in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee, who have been objecting to students having access to digital reading platforms to prevent them from accessing books on gender, race, and LGBTQIA+ themes. This is not a coincidence as there has been a driving force of anti-transgender and other biogted rhetoric building from those who wish to do us harm.

In early May 2022, a transgender girl from Tennessee who goes by the social media name VioWynn was taken from her home by law enforcement when she was streaming Minecraft while on Twitch. Wynn was suspended from school for not using the bathroom of her assigned gender at birth and was ordered to go to foster care by a court decision; the school deemed her truant even though she wasn't considered to be truant by her family. She was released from foster care in early June and will be allowed to complete her education at the same school she attends.
