In recent years, living standards in both the European Union and Canada have declined considerably because of the imposition of austerity measures by the governments. The European sovereign debt crisis of the 2010s caused the EU to recommend austerity in attempt to reduce the sovereign debt of the member nations most affected like Greece. The measures included cuts to health and social services, all of which were rejected by the citizens in the bailout referendums that were held during the crisis. Financial bailouts get initiated even if they are rejected by a majority of the population. Austerity measures increase poverty which result in neofacist parties occupying parliaments. Even some members of the governments of some countries have recommended military coups as the financial situations worsen. The imposition of austerity measures in Canada began in the early 1990s by several conservative premiers, and the measures marked the beginning of the privatization of public services, a trend that accelerated after Harper became prime minister. Trudeau later expanded the austerity measures along with public figures such as Rachel Notely et al, which caused figures like Jason Kenney, Doug Ford, and Francois Legault to be elected to the provincial legislatures after Trump was elected. Fascist parties have been slowly taking over Canada since that time frame, and many Canadians do not understand the fact that the country is not immune to Trumpism. Neofascism is late-stage neoliberalism, and the expanding of neofascism will cause poverty to further increase. In fact, we are seeing several instances where authoritarian right-wing parties seek to obtain total control over their governments this decade.
