Our investment rate as a civilisation is fatally low — I know I’ve said this before, but maybe this time you understand it in a more visceral way. It’s just 20%. A civilisation with an investment rate of just 20% isn’t reinvesting its surplus in public goods. It’s not going to stay one for very long. That rate needs to hit around 50% for the word “reinvestment” to really mean something. In our case, an abysmal investment rate of 20% means we can’t even provide vaccines as a civilization, and so every winter, right on cue, a new variant is going to arrive, forever.
