When everyone else is your competitor, rival, adversary, in a contest for the basics of existence — a little money, medicine, food, shelter — the norms of friendship don’t and can’t develop. Instead of the European and Canadian norms of gentleness, humour, dignity, warmth, you get the Americans norms of indifference, enmity, aggression, hostility, cruelty.
