There’s a “usual list,” by now, of places Americans — educated, thoughtful ones — hope to flee to. Canada, Western Europe, New Zealand, maybe Australia, now that it doesn’t have a — LOL — climate change denying government. The world’s developed social democracies, in other words. This is a good list. It’s a great list. Life in these countries is wonderful and beautiful and downright amazing, at least compared to America. It’s not that they don’t have problems — sure they do. But life is totally different. People, by and large, aren’t mean, hostile, selfish, aggressive, cruel. They’re not kind of on auto-pilot, traumatized by lifelong debt and omnipresent spite into being human hair-triggers, just waiting to lash out violently. Life is civilized. It’s great.
