What is different about the 2020s when compared to the period shortly before World War II is that the planet is running out of the resources that it needs to sustain its global societies. According to the book entitled Limits to Growth, extraction of resources is necessary to allow for food and industrial production, which are needed to allow the planet's population to increase. When the book was published in 1972, it warned us that the planet would start running out of resources after the late 2010s, which would cause food production and industrial production to decline greatly. As a result of the food and industrial production collapsing, population would continue to expand for one more generation before collapsing calamitously as deprivation takes hold.
